HS girls' basketball wins one game and loses one game at Yokota

The high school girls' basketball teams won once and lost once at Yokota. Varsity won 36-33 and JV lost unofficially by a score of 23-9.

Varsity maintained a single-digit lead for most of the game with accurate outside shooting and strong, physical rebounding near the basket. The Knights pushed their lead to nine points with fewer than two minutes remaining before Yokota made two three-pointers in the next minute.

The Panthers got the ball back down three points with a chance to tie with just 10 seconds left, but Jessica stole a cross-court pass to seal the Knights' victory.

"I told the girls afterward that this was a total team win," assistant coach Jared Johnson said. "We passed the ball very well, involving lots of players in the offense. And even though Yokota had a size advantage against us, lots of different players helped to box out and run hard after loose balls. Moving forward, I would say our biggest point of improvement is learning to adjust our defense to certain opponents' strengths and weaknesses.'"

In the win, Rachel led the Knights with 10 points to go with four rebounds. Mitsuki had eight points, Jessica had six points and 14 rebounds, Anna had six points and seven rebounds and Yeonjoo had nine rebounds.

The JV team played a shortened, six-minute-quarter game due to its lack of a full team. The Knights were within range of the Panthers for most of the game, but Yokota gradually extended its lead.

"Our offense played a lot better than the final score indicated," Johnson said. "We passed better than in our previous game and got a lot of good looks, and a bunch of shots were close but just didn't fall. The big issue was rebounding, so that's something that we'll have to keep working on."

Sora had six points, Kiera had two points and Charis had one point in the Knights' loss.

Varsity now has a 2-0 record this season. JV is 1-1 in its unofficial season. The Knights will play next at home against Seisen on Tuesday.
