Varsity girls' basketball team wins and then loses on final day of Kanto Classic

The varsity girls' basketball team wrapped up Kanto Classic Tournament play at ASIJ on Saturday with two games. They first defeated Kinnick 37-30 to advance to the quarterfinals before losing to St. Paul 37-26.

Against Kinnick, CAJ was able to score consistently throughout the game without any major droughts. The team made a good balance of inside and outside shots. Coach Craig Eby said rebounding was one key positive for the Knights against the Red Devils.

"They're bigger than us," Eby said. "But we did a really good job on the boards against them."

In the game, Anna had 12 points and four rebounds, Rachel had eight points, Kachel had six points and Jessica had six points and seven rebounds. Mitsuki also had six rebounds.

CAJ had lost 34-20 to St. Paul in pool play, so the team's result against them was slightly better in tournament play. A low-scoring first half saw CAJ with just a 8-6 deficit at the intermission.

"I felt like we played a better game this time," Eby said. "Both teams were playing good defense early on and we were able to stay competitive longer this time."

In the second half, though, the Warriors exploded for 29 points on the strength of their defensive double-teams. St. Paul frequently got steals and fast-break layups, and the Knights' opponent also shot very well from the free-throw line.

Against St. Paul, Rachel had seven points and four rebounds, Kachel had six points and four rebounds, Mitsuki had five points and four rebounds, Anna had four points and nine rebounds and Jessica had eight rebounds.

Eby added that a big positive from the final day of the tournament was Kachel returning as more of an offensive threat. She has been dealing with a wrist injury on her shooting hand, but she scored a combined 12 points on Saturday.

In the Knights' six games during the tournament, the top scorers were Anna (45), Rachel (38) and Jessica (30). Jessica, Mitsuki and Anna were the team's leading rebounders, in that order.

The Knights' overall season record is now 8-7. They will continue league play next Tuesday by hosting ASIJ for Senior Night.
