Varsity boys' basketball loses two pool play games on Day 1 of Kanto Classic

The varsity boys' basketball team lost a pair of Kanto Classic Tournament pool play games to Kadena (59-22) and Zama (49-48) at ASIJ on Thursday. The Knights' overall season record is now 6-9.

The first game was an uninspiring one for CAJ against a good Kadena team. The Knights were without Enosh and Kyle made his return after an ankle injury and wasn't playing at 100 percent.

"We really struggled against their half-court defense," coach Steve Hall said. "We made a lot of bad passes that led to easy baskets for them. We just weren't ready to play and were very casual with the ball, which were very avoidable things."

The Knights had beaten 58-43 last week, but they were unable to defeat Zama the second around. Hall said a key for the team was not cashing in on its shots close to the basket, which were such a big part of the Knights' previous victory against the Trojans.

Hall added that Zama came out much better prepared to prevent the Knights from surging to a fast start, as they did last week.

"[Zama] was much more aggressive this time and looked to score more in transition." Hall said. "They also hit some outside shots that they didn't hit last time. Overall, they definitely played a little bit better than last time. And not having Enosh, especially for rebounding, hurt us."

In the end, Koji missed a long three-point shot at the buzzer that would have won the game for CAJ.

The Knights have two more pool play games on Friday: against Father Duenas at 11:40 a.m. and against KIS at 4:30 p.m. Full tournament information is available
