Varsity girls' basketball wins once and loses once on Day 3 of Kanto Classic

The varsity girls' basketball team played in the third and final day of ASIJ's Kanto Classic Basketball Tournament on Saturday. The Knights beat Edgren 43-15 in the first round but fell to Okkodo 35-33 in the quarterfinals.

CAJ had a very slow start against Edgren, falling behind 8-3 in the first quarter. However, the Knights settled down and outscored the Eagles 40-7 the rest of the way.

"We started connecting on our shots, and then came the good defense and rebounding," coach Craig Eby said. "Our passing continued to be really good. It was nice that everyone got to play some in that game,"

Against Edgren, CAJ had a balanced scoring attack led by Mitsuki (nine points), Anna (eight), and Jessica and Mari with six points each.

The second game was close throughout, with neither team being able to get much more than a two-point lead. In the end, Mitsuki made a three-point shot with a few seconds remaining, but Okkodo was able to run out the clock to secure the win.

Eby said the Knights played very well, despite the loss.

"We did have a few fumbles and missed shots inside, but it was still a solid game against a solid team," Eby said. He added that, while Okkodo made a lot of threes and other jump shots, the Knights did a good job responding to those plays, frequently getting the points back right away.

Against the Bulldogs, Mitsuki had 11 points, four assists and three steals. Anna had eight points and six rebounds, Rachel had six points, Mari had 12 rebounds and Jessica had six rebounds.

Varsity's overall season record is now 14-2. The team doesn't play again until February 5, when it visits ASIJ.
