HS girls' soccer wins Sakura Tournament at St. Mary's

The high school girls' soccer team played three games in the Sakura Girls' Soccer Tournament at St. Mary's on Saturday. The Knights won all three of their games to win the tournament.

CAJ beat ISSH by a score of 2-0, Seisen by a 1-0 score and Luminoso Kawasaki by a score of 3-2, all in pool play. The Knights were then declared the winners of the championship due to lightning cancelling the championship match.

Coach Charles Smoker summarized CAJ's day of soccer:

"Winning this Sakura Tournament was one goal our team had at the beginning of the year, so we've been looking forward to this. We were quite shorthanded because five players were taking the SAT and couldn't play until the last part of our three games, and some couldn't play until the fourth game [which ended up not happening]. And Akina is injured, so we only had 11 members.

Fortunately, Reeko could play for us, but even then we had only 11 members with no substitutes. We played two 50-minute games under these conditions and pulled out two victories! We had some desperately needed relief as Miyuki and HyeonSeo made it in time for most of our third game. In our third game, it was tied 2-2 with five minutes to go before Keziah scored to put us up 3-2 and seal the victory!

Then, we went on to the championship game, but lightning prevented that from taking place. So because we had already beaten the other three teams in round robin play, we were given first place."

CAJ had three players receive awards at the tournament: Maika (most valuable player), Keziah (most goals scored) and Rina (best goalkeeper).

The Knights now have a long layoff before the Far East Tournament starts in Misawa on May 22.
