MS boys' basketball teams win all three games versus NIS

The three middle school boys' basketball teams all defeated NIS on Saturday. A Team won 26-25, B Team won 25-23 and C Team won 24-11.

A Team's game was a close one most of the way. CAJ used some hot outside shooting to start with a 10-2 lead, but the Vikings fought back and actually took a slim lead at several points in the second half.

But despite missing two starters, the Knights made the winning plays down the stretch to preserve the win.

"We pulled this game out by playing good defense and crashing and controlling the boards," said B Team coach Charles Smoker, who stepped in to coach the A Team. "This was a well-played game by both teams, so it was a shame that one team had to lose."

Elijah led CAJ with 10 points, while Sho had nine and Noah had five. The A Team's record is now 3-4 this season.

The B Team's win was especially impressive because the Knights were down 20-5 at halftime.

"We've been struggling with confidence in our shooting and our ability to work together, and that showed up early in the game," Smoker said. He added that the team's plays were working and they getting to the basket, but the shots just weren't falling early on.

In the second half, those same shots started falling and the Knights locked down on defense with some adjustments.

"In the second half, we worked on a couple of things on defense to counter their backdoor cuts and screens," Smoker said. "We could have given up at halftime, but we just chipped away point by point, rebound by rebound and we were able to overcome the 15-point lead."

Suyoung had nine points for the B Team, while Eastin had six and Josh had five. The Knights' season record is now 4-4.

The C Team saved its best game for this final game of their season, according to coach Lorne Anderson.

"On defense, our help rotations were solid against all the pick and rolls that NIS attempted," Anderson said. "On offense, we played aggressive, constantly attacking the basket and rebounding well. It was a great way to end the season!"

Sejin led CAJ with eight points, and Hyun had six points. The C Team's record finished at 4-5.

The C Team's season is done, but the A Team Tournament and B Team Jamboree will be take place next Saturday to end the season for those two teams as well.
