JV girls' basketball loses 25-22 to ASIJ

The JV girls’ basketball team lost 25-22 to ASIJ on Tuesday. The Knights now have a 5-4 record this season.

CAJ led for the entire first half and most of the third quarter against its undefeated opponent. The Knights were up 16-9 against the Mustangs at halftime thanks to good passing on offense and excellent defensive rotations.

In the second half, though, the Mustangs significantly increased their defensive pressure and overall energy to rattle CAJ.

“ASIJ came out of halftime playing a lot better,” coach Jared Johnson. “They made us uncomfortable on offense and got a lot of rebounds with their energy and size.”

Johnson added that ASIJ having more players available than CAJ (11 to eight) also helped the Mustangs better maintain their energy physically, mentally and emotionally at the end of the game.

The Knights had a balanced scoring attack. Mari and Akina had six points, Tayoung had four points and Tina, Charis and Mariko each had two points. Mari (13 rebounds) and Mariko (five rebounds) were active on the boards and Akina had four steals.

CAJ will play next at Kinnick on Thursday evening.
