Varsity boys' basketball wins once and loses once in pool play on Day 2 of Kanto Classic

The varsity boys' basketball team won once and lost once in pool play of the Kanto Classic Tournament at ASIJ on Friday. They lost to Father Duenas 47-39 and then beat KIS 47-30. The Knights finished 1-3 in pool play and have a 7-10 overall record this season.

The difference in the first game, according to coach Steve Hall, came in the third quarter. Father Duenas won that quarter by nine points while CAJ won the other three quarters combined by one point.

"They're a pretty good team, they defend pretty well and they have one big guy and some quick guys. We competed well with them and played pretty well," Hall said. "We just weren't quite ready coming out of halftime and didn't have good focus."

CAJ's first win in pool play against KIS came on the strength of a big fourth quarter. The Knights outscored the Phoenix 16-2 in the fourth quarter. Hall said the Knights were the more talented team, but that KIS played really hard and was able to capitalize on some of CAJ's mistakes.

"We went to a zone [in the fourth quarter] because they were able to drive around our man-to-man defense quite a bit in the third quarter," Hall said. "They had decent quickness and our fatigue was showing a bit."

Hall said Kyle and Koji were missing some shots that usually fall for them, but that Enosh had a really good game.

The Knights start tournament play on Saturday morning against Yokota. Full tournament information is available
