Varsity girls' basketball wins both games on Day 1 of Kanto Classic

The high school varsity girls' basketball team played in the first day of ASIJ's Kanto Classic Basketball Tournament on Thursday. The Knights beat Seisen 38-12 and then beat Humphreys 29-25.

In the first game, CAJ had a strong second and third quarter to extend its lead. The Knights were ahead by 25 points going into the fourth quarter, so the last five minutes of the game were played with a running clock.

Against Seisen, CAJ got a little bit of production from many different players. Anna had 13 points and Rachel had eight points. Jessica and Mitsuki both had six rebounds, and Mitsuki added five assists. HyeonSeo had four steals and Mari had two blocks.

The Humphreys game was much closer. CAJ struggled with turnovers and converting baskets inside, coach Craig Eby said. It wasn't until the middle of the fourth quarter that the Knights scored three times in a row that they earned themselves a bit of breathing room. At that point, they tried to run out the clock.

"It was difficult to see how much time was left because the clock wasn't working, so they had to use a small one like we have in our mini gym," Eby said. "It was our lowest scoring output of the season, but we made up for it with a great defensive effort."

Against Humphreys, Anna had 10 points and Rachel had eight points. Mari had five points and 10 rebounds and Jessica had six rebounds and five steals.

Varsity's overall season record remains undefeated at 12-0. Eby added that he has never had a girls' team start a season like this.

The team plays on Friday at 9:30 a.m. against Academy of Our Lady and at 1 p.m. against St. Paul in Day 2 of the tournament.
