Varsity girls' basketball wins once and loses once on Day 2 of Kanto Classic

The high school varsity girls' basketball team played in the second day of ASIJ's Kanto Classic Basketball Tournament on Friday. The Knights beat Academy of Our Lady 50-33 but then lost to St. Paul 25-20 to finish pool play with a 3-1 record.

Coach Craig Eby said the Knights played "steady ball" against Academy of Our Lady. Post players Jessica (14 points) and Mari (13 points, seven rebounds) were able to take advantage of their matchups inside. Anna also had 13 points and nine rebounds.

"We stuck with it and just slowly began to pull away in the second half," Eby said.

The Knights' loss against St. Paul was their first loss of the season. Leading scorer Rachel had twisted an ankle in the previous game and was not able to play in the afternoon.

"We did a pretty good job on defense," Eby said. However, he added that the Knights missed Rachel's aggressiveness on offense and that the team had trouble maintaining confidence in their shooting.

Varsity's overall season record is now 13-1. The team starts bracket play at 9 a.m. against Edgren. If the Knights win, they will play either Kinnick or Okkodo at 12:30 p.m.
