Executive Limitations

  • Under the Policy Governance (Carver model) system, board policy is divided into two categories through which the board of directors governs the school.
    • The ends of the board are a big-picture snapshot of the "best-possible CAJ."
    • The executive limitations "set the rope in the pool" for the head of school, designating the line the head of school cannot exceed in seeking to achieve the ends.
  • Executive limitations are written in negative language, typically stating things like, "The head of school shall not ..." or "The head of school shall not fail to ..."
    • For example, when it comes to hiring staff, the board of directors sets an executive limitation against hiring non-Christian staff members by stating:
      • On behalf of the board, the head of school shall contract staff qualified and committed to carry out the mission of CAJ, and shall not cause or allow current or prospective paid staff and/or volunteers to be treated in a manner which is unbiblical, unjust, unlawful, unsafe, undignified, or lacking appropriate confidentiality.
        • Accordingly, the head of school shall not fail to:
          • 2.2.1 Employ staff that meet the following qualifications:
            • 2.2.1.1 Born-again Christian who models a Christ-like lifestyle
